Human-monkey conflict mitigation study report is handed over to Pokhara Municipality Kaski district

Human-monkey conflict mitigation study report of Pokhara Metropolitan City has been handed over to the chief of Economic Development Division (EDD) of Pokhara Metropolitan City, Mr. Manahar Kadariya on May 8, 2026. On that occasion Mr. Suroj Chiluwal, Mr. Shiva Singh Dhami and others staff from EDD and Mr. Padma Kiran Rana and Mr. Thakur Giri on the behalf of TOLI were presented. The study was commenced on 22 December 2025 and completed on May 8, 2026. The monkey has been damaging the agricultural crops severely in 20 wards out of the 33 wards of the metropolitan city.

The study team selected 5 representative wards on consultation with chief of the EDD i.e. ward no. 19, 21, 24, 26 and 32 based on monkey incidences, altitude, faces and geographical representation. The study team was designed to discuss with ward committee members at first following by the group discussion and finally household survey. The ward committee identified two most problematic clusters in each ward for the focus group discussion (FGD), whereas the cluster provided the 15 problematic person’s name from each cluster to survey at HH level. In this regards, we took discussion with 5 ward committee members, 10 focus group discussion and 150 individual HH. Before survey taken, organized an orientation training and pre-testing of the HH level questionnaires to the surveyors. HH questionnaires was designing in kobo tool box apps. Surveyors of the study team were Mr. Guna Kumar Shrestha, Ms. Gita Devi Chhetri, Mr. Thakur Giri, Ms. Laxmi Pariyar and Mr. Chet Nath Tiwari, whereas the Supervisors of the study team were Mr. Gehendra Bahadur Gurung and Mr. Padma Kiran Rana.

The draft report was presented twice upon the request of the chief of the EDD, first on March 20, 2026 in the meeting of Ward level Agriculture Network (WAN) of Pokhara Metropolitan City and second presentation was made on April 17, 2026 in Agriculture Business Promotion Committee meeting, the meeting was chaired by the chief of Pokhara Metropolitan City Mr. Dhan Raj Acharya. In first slot presentation 32 participants were presented whereas in second slot presentation 30 participants were participated. The suggestions and comments of the participants were incorporated in the final report. The report has been analyzed in 5 domains in respect to: i. problem due to monkey menace ii. Problem created by monkey and current status iii. reasons of damaging crop by monkey iv. remedies adopted by the farmers to mitigate monkey menace v. expectation from government to increase production and productivity. Similarly, it has recommended in 7 major sectors: i. Monkey habitat ii. Monkey dislike or less like crops iii. Monkey’s nature v. Government’s policy, rules and regulations vi. Illegal monkey translocation vii. Management aspects to mitigate monkey menace. Similarly, the report has suggested 9 model schemes to be implemented by the metropolitan city as a pilot project, so that it can be replicated after successful.
